SECTION 2.0 โ LOAD & SUPPLY PARAMETERS
Scope: Standard reference values for residential electrical load calculations, service sizing, and utility cost estimation. All values are nominal at 120/240 VAC unless noted.
2.1 Load Specifications (Step 1 โ Identify per Circuit/Area)
- General Lighting: 3 VA/sq ft (volt-amperes per square foot of floor area).
- Small Appliance Circuit: 1,500 VA per circuit (minimum two circuits required per NEC).
- Laundry Circuit: 1,500 VA (dedicated circuit).
- Range (Electric): 10,000 W (watts, nameplate rating).
- Dryer (Electric): 5,500 W (typical nameplate).
- Water Heater: 5,000 W (standard 40-50 gallon unit).
- Central A/C: 4,000 W (typical 3-ton unit, compressor + fan).
- Heat Pump: 4,000 W (typical, includes compressor & auxiliary heat).
- Electric Heating: 12 W/sq ft (resistive baseboard or radiant).

How This Calculator Handles Motor Loads and Diversity Factors
This is where most tools fail. Motor loads aren't just nameplate amps โ you have to account for starting current, duty cycle, and whether they're the largest motor in the group. Our calculator follows NEC Article 430: it adds 25% to the largest motor's full-load current, then sums the rest at 100%. No guesswork.
Diversity factors? That's where the real magic happens. The calculator applies demand factors from NEC Table 220.84 for multi-family and commercial occupancies. For lighting, it uses 100% for the first 20,000 VA and 50% for anything beyond (per NEC 220.42). You don't have to remember the tables โ they're baked in.
In my experience, the biggest mistake electricians make is skipping the demand factor step. They just add up every load at 100% and end up with a 600-amp service that only needs 400. That's expensive overkill. This tool prevents that.
What About the Electricity Rate?
The calculator uses the national average of $0.145/kWh, sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and verified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But your local rate might be different. Check your utility bill or the EIA's state-level data. You can adjust the rate in the calculator's advanced settings.
Electricity rates change quarterly. The calculator's rate was collected on April 12, 2026, and is verified against a second source. If you need fresher data, the EIA updates its site monthly.
