Is this NEC load calculation worksheet updated for the 2023 code?

This tool uses the 2020 NEC tables, which are still the legally adopted standard in most states. The 2023 cycle doesn't change the core load calculation methodology for dwelling units.

Enter your actual nameplate rating. The calculator accepts custom values for range, dryer, water heater, and HVAC loads.

Does this tool handle electric vehicle charging loads?

Accepted Answer

Not yet. EV chargers are considered continuous loads and need separate calculation per NEC 625. We're working on an update.

Why is my service size showing 100A when I expected 200A?

The calculator uses the total connected load after demand factors. If your loads are small, 100A may be sufficient. But many homes install 200A for future expansion. The tool gives you the minimum required.

Is this worksheet acceptable for permit applications?

Accepted Answer

That depends on your local authority. Most inspectors accept computer-generated worksheets. Print it and attach it to your application.

What's the difference between VA and watts?

Accepted Answer

For resistive loads (water heaters, ranges), VA equals watts. For motors and HVAC, they differ slightly. NEC uses VA for load calculations. The tool outputs in VA.
